Wine-filled Wanderings in the Cape Winelands – Franschhoek Valley

Tasting the secrets of the Cape Winelands is a favourite past-time of hardy Capetonians and tourists alike. The only potential set-back is that of finding a designated driver. Thankfully there is a solution that requires no seeking of a teetotaller whatsoever and in fact provides a fun entertaining activity option too. Behold, the Franschhoek Wine Tram.

Yes, you read that right, the Western Cape now offers its very own hop-on hop-off tram and tram bus experience taking you on a wine-tasting tour through the magnificent Franschhoek Valley. Boasting beautiful vineyards, fine wines and delectable cuisine paired with a rich 300 year history, the Franschhoek Valley is an absolute gem for those with a taste for the finer things in life. Just imagine cruising along through the picturesque scenery that Franschhoek is renowned for while tasting some of the best wines the Cape has to offer, all while in the lulling comfort of the nostalgic wine tram.

The hop-on hop-off tour means that you can enjoy a unique and leisurely experience of the vineyards, whether it’s wine-tasting, cellar tours or a scrumptious lunch. All the tours start and end at the ticket office in Frnaschoek Square with different departure times depending on the tour you booked with the earliest tram leaving at 10:00am and the latest at 12:45pm.

Currently, the Franschhoek Wine Tram offers four hop-on hop-off tours to choose from: Blue Line, Red Line, Yellow Line and Green Line showcasing a selection of eight different wine estates including Rickety Bridge, Grande Provence, Leopard’s Leap, Maison and Chamonix plus others.

Booking in advance is highly recommended as each tour only accommodates 25 guests, although tickets are sold on the day at the ticket office. It is also best to arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes before your departure time to collect your tickets and to secure your seats.

One you leave the departure point, you will be taken to one wine estate every hour so if you hope to enjoy a lunch at one of the wine estates in your tour, be sure to book directly with the restaurant beforehand. You may of course stay longer than an hour but know that this will mean forfeiting one of the wineries on your itinerary.

The tram tour also includes a delightfully informative narration that gives insight into the history of Franschhoek and wine cultivation in the valley while you take in the breath-taking views of the beautiful vineyards. There are also complimentary wine tastings offered at some of the wine estates depending on which tour you chose, so make sure to enquire when booking or to view their website for further information.
