Renowned for its magnificent natural beauty, and seemingly never-ending coastline, Cape Town is a top location for views of the best scenery in the country. It’s picturesque setting and atmosphere makes for the perfect photo, and attracts hordes of tourists and locals alike to marvel at its stunning views. The Mother City is replete in restaurants and social hotspots with vantage points to capture that perfect moment. The more adventurous can devour the same natural beauty from mountain tops and the like. The following is a list of where the best sunsets can be best appreciated.

The Strip, Camps Bay

Right along the Atlantic seaboard, Camps Bay is an upmarket suburb which boasts a series of top of the range coastal restaurants. Huddled along the western coast, right below the popular Twelve Apostles mountain range and trendy Hotel, the palm-lined beachfront screams Miami in Africa, and sets the schematic tone for that Instaworthy shot. In specific, Café Caprice and Mezepoli serve up excellent Mediterranean-style platters, as well as views.

Table Mountain

What a way to tick off having visited Table Mountain, an official 7th Wonder of Nature, by having marvelled at the Cape Town sunset from atop the mountain. Cable car access to the top of the mountain is scheduled at the most opportune times when the plateau is clear, so you know that the best views are guaranteed. The Table Mountain company has resumed its Sunset Special, which offers cable car rides to the plateau at Golden Hour at a discounted rate.

Cape Peninsula

One of the most majestic things about experiencing the sunset at the Cape Peninsula is that you are standing at the southernmost point of an entire continent and watching sunset. View from Cape Point, the furthest point along the peak. Alternatively, tourists can view the sunsets from the lighthouse, which reach far across False Bay. For a comfortable view, the Brass Bell Restaurant and Pub boasts an open deck along the Kalk Bay coast. Sip on stylish sundowners at the Harbour House, which has a similar setting, in an equally enviable seaside location.

Lion’s Head

Sun or no sun, climbing Lion’s Head is a must for both the exercise and aesthetics of the views which are perfectly captured from a height. Make the best of the short hike by taking in the fantastic sunset view while enjoying a romantic picnic. As sunset draws to a close, the night sky becomes illuminated with the lights of neighbouring suburbs which dazzle the sky like fairy lights and provide a bird’s eye view over most of the City.

Sunset Yacht Cruise (V&A Waterfront)

Last but not least, a Sunset Yacht Cruise is perhaps one of the best ways to get a multitude of sunset views across the city. Intimate private cruises can be arranged to include family or friends. Sunset champagne cruises are popular options, whereby a private cruise can be chartered from the V&A Waterfront, cruising off the north coast and along the Atlantic seaboard for maximum coverage.

On average, Cape Town receives approximately 14 hours of daylight. In warmer months, sunrise is set for as early as 5 am, and sunset is as late as 8pm in the evening. Cruises usually require booking, and are weather- and safety-dependant, subject to refund if conditions do not permit cruising. Nevertheless, Cape Town is scattered with scenic spots, and there is no single perfect location from which to view the candyfloss skies of the Mother City come sunset.
