DISCOVER AN UNDERWATER WORLD AT THE TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM

One of the major tourist (and local) attractions of the vibrant Cape Town is the Two Oceans Aquarium. It’s a delight for visitors of all ages and a destination in its own right.

Whether you prefer a detached, simply ‘look and see’ kind of outing or a fully ‘hands-on’ experience, this underwater world will capture your attention. Situated in Portswood Square at the V & A Waterfront, the Aquarium boasts over 3000 exciting marine creatures to ogle and be introduced to through various exhibits, tanks and tours.

No matter which day of the week you visit – this popular aquatic destination is open 365 days of the year – you have the opportunity to be witness to one of the daily animal feedings. The I&J Predator Exhibit has a daily feeding at 3pm and the Penguin Exhibit has daily African penguin feedings at 11h45 and 14h30. For a real treat be sure to plan your trip around the Shark feeding which is open to the public only on Sundays at 3pm.

Some of the delightful and educational exhibits you get to enjoy at the world-class Two Oceans Aquarium include:

SMART LIVING CHALLENGE ZONE

This is a fairly new addition to the aquarium and is one that highlights our impact on the environment. Encouraging visitors to make environmentally friendly and responsible choices in every aspect of their daily living, the exhibit educates on ways to minimise their footprint and help enrich biodiversity by reducing waste, water and energy consumption.

OCEANS OF CONTRAST: INDIAN OCEAN GALLERY

As suggested, this exhibit features the tropical marine life that one would expect to find in the warm Indian Ocean including the Western clownfish (made famous by the Finding Nemo movie), honeycomb eels and a beautiful coral exhibit.

OCEANS OF CONTRAST: ATLANTIC OCEAN GALLERY

This interesting exhibit showcases exotic marine life such as the endangered Knysna seahorse, the somewhat creepy giant spider crab and the dreamy moon jellyfish. Some of the more common creatures include the octopus, abalone (perlemoen), crayfish, giant periwinkle, urchins, starfish and anemones.

PENGUIN EXHIBIT

Slightly deceptive, the Penguin Exhibit does not only showcase penguins. Over several years, this tour has matured to include a ten year old milkwood forest, a breeding colony of African penguins, rockhopper penguins, African black oystercatchers and a vast assortment of freshwater fish. Those looking for a truly unique and inspiring experience will not be disappointed by this exhibit.

THE OCEAN BASKET KELP FOREST EXHIBIT

The Ocean Basket Kelp Forest Exhibit is an enchanting underwater world that literally does look like a submerged forest. The kelp plants look like tall trees wafting in a watery wind, while the many fish swimming to and fro mimic birds flying through the leaves.

I&J PREDATOR EXHIBIT

It probably goes to say the one of the most popular attractions are the ragged-tooth sharks which can be seen in the I&J Predator Exhibit. Boasting an 11 metre-wide by 4 metre-high acrylic panel through which these toothy creatures can be viewed, this is one exhibit not to be missed.

THE TOUCH POOL AND MICROSCOPE EXHIBITS

The Touch Pool and Microscope Exhibit is one of the more hands-on experiences at the aquarium. It gives visitors the chance to take a peek into the microscopic marine life not
seen with the naked eye. Usually exhibits are ‘hands off’ but the Touch Pool encourages visitors to do exactly that – feel, touch and explore the various shells, water plants and animals with your very own hands.
