We’ve all heard it before, that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. While there’s truth in this, we think it’s not only important WHAT you eat, but WHERE you eat it. The flavours of your meal are naturally enhanced by the beauty of your surroundings so why not take your morning dining to another level with these choice restaurant selections.

Attracting all walks of life, one can expect to be introduced to an myriad of interesting people as well as interesting foods. Ranging from Nutella-filled croissants to brioche French toast with Richard Bosman bacon, brie and watermelon and even house-made pizza, they have something for everyone. RIVERYWAY CAFÉ (HOUT BAY)

TIP OF THE TEAM: Smashed avo + feta with caramelised onion and balsamic beads on sourdough toast

Having opened just last year in early 2015, this new café has already made its mark on the cuisine scene. Receiving rave reviews from satisfied customers, the décor is elegant while quirky, the food unique and tasty. Their set menu includes the classics as well as some exotic options and regular daily/weekly specials with prices averaging between R50 and R70 for breakfasts. Situated within the Midway Centre in Hout Bay, it gets its name from the Baviaanskloof river that runs parallel to it. As a side note, while not exactly a breakfast item, we also highly recommend that you try one of their adventurous and somewhat famous milkshakes such as The Key Lime (lime curd, coconut biscuit and fresh cream) or the Charlie Brown (Chocolate Fudge, Peanut Butter and salty pretzel).

TASHAS (CONSTANTIA VILLAGE)

TIP OF THE TEAM: Potato Rosti

From a shy beginning in Atholl Square in 2005, Tashas have expanded to 13 restaurants throughout South Africa and have now opened their first international restaurant in Dubai. Their pursuit in creating an environment that is as important as the food has enabled them to establish a chain of restaurants that are both contemporary and timeless. Just to give you a hint of what they have to offer, we suggest you try the delicious Apple Goats Cheese Salad which boasts grilled goats cheese served on ciabatta toast, caramelised apple, baby gem lettuce, micro herbs, walnuts, red onion & rocket tossed in a balsamic & olive oil dressing – can you say YUM?! It’s an absolute must for any foodie fanatic.

JASON’S BAKERY (CITY BOWL)

TIP OF THE TEAM: Today’s Doughssant

Not for the faint-hearted, Jason’s bakery takes your tastesbuds on a fantastical food journey. While their main menu contains the standard breakfast options, they specialise in decadence with their daily specials menu including indulgent items such as a croissant filled with peanut butter, wrapped in bacon and drizzled with maple syrup or a pie stuffed with crayfish and mac and cheese. Their situation in the vibrant Bree Street – fast becoming known as the ‘restaurant strip’ of Cape Town – means that they are centrally located and accessible resulting in there always being people lined up to find a table. With this in mind, it would be worthwhile to do a little forward planning and book in advance as this is one experience you don’t want to miss.

LA BELLE BISTRO & BAKERY (CAMPS BAY)

TIP OF THE TEAM: French Toast

This sophisticated restaurant offers fresh and wholesome baked goods with a uniquely rustic flair. Set in the beautiful Camps Bay within the luxurious Promenade, its position allows for uninterrupted views of the stunning Camps Bay beach as well as the distinctive palm-fringe stretch of coastline. While you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to ordering something from their delectable menu, we personally recommend their Ricotta hotcakes with Honeycomb Butter or for those with a healthy appetite the ‘La Belle Breakfast’ which offers the combination of a Croissant with Fresh Fruit & Jam with the full English Breakfast all in one. It’s the perfect spot to sit back, relax and take in the glorious views whilst satiating your appetite.
